Our featured speaker in January was Bryan Lewis, the founder of our Cairo High School website. Bryan (son of Wilma Lewis) grew up in Cairo and matriculated through the Cairo Public School System. While in high school, he was always very active. He played baseball, football and was one of the managers on the basketball team. He was also a member of many club and organizations like the Beta club, Science Club and National Honor Society. He graduated in 1981 and was recognized as one of two recipients of the Illinois State Scholarship Award. Bryan attended the University of Illinois (go ILLINI) from 1981-85, where he graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in the area of Finance.

Bryan has worked in corporate America since that time. He started his career working for Transamerica Life Insurance Company in Los Angeles, CA and then Washington DC. As a business development rep he worked with some the largest consulting firms on healthcare and benefit plans. After 3 years he then took the opportunity to work for IBM as Marketing Rep in the DC Metro area. He also met his wife (Donna), started a family and enrolled in graduate school. Bryan received his Master’s of Business Administration from Howard University in May of 1993.

Bryan’s career with IBM for the last 21 years has given him the opportunity to travel the country and grow his sales and leadership skills. Currently Bryan is the Territory Sales Executive for IBM’s Inside Sales team covering the Southeast Region. Bryan also finds time to give back to community with his current and past roles. He coached youth football, baseball and AAU basketball for about 10 years. He also find time to be the IBM executive sponsor with a inner city Atlanta public school.

About 18 months ago, Bryan had the idea to start this website to reconnect with friends that he had lost contact with. He initially hoped to get 100 people in the first year, but the word quickly spread and today we have over 1200 members from all across the world.

In Bryan’s words, “this has brought an enormous amount of pride to me being involved with the website, but it brings even more knowing that some of the activities that have come from here are making a difference in someone’s life”.

Cairo students win safety contest
By Carly O'Keefe

Cairo, IL (KFVS) - Some students at Cairo High School are doing their part to keep southern Illinois roads safe.

Members of the school Beta Club came up with an Operation Teen Safe Driving campaign that's aimed at curbing distracted driving.

The slogan of their campaign: "Subtract Distractions from your Life". The students recently gave a presentation to Illinois State Police and local authorities and were selected to receive a $2000 grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Traffic Safety and the Allstate Foundation to keep their efforts going.

The Cairo Operation Teen Safe Driving presentation will now compete with other schools in the region for the grand prize. Cairo is one of 15 schools in southern Illinois selected to compete for the grand prize. Schools in each region will face off to see who can develop the best safety presentation. The winning school from each of the state's seven regions will each receive $2500 in prize money to host a post-prom party.
